Understanding Diphtheria: A Comprehensive Guide for Pupils, Students and Parents

Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae. It is a vaccine-preventable disease and bacterial infection affecting the nose, throat, and sometimes skin of an individual.

The outbreak has disproportionately affected children with a high number of confirmed cases and deaths in the age 1-14 group. Nigeria is currently battling a diphtheria outbreak that has raised significant concerns with a surge in cases and deaths, particularly affecting children, and spreading to neighbouring states like Kano, Lagos and Osun.

How does Diphtheria Spread?

Diphtheria spreads through:

• Direct contact with an infected person.
• From droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
• Contact with contaminated clothing or objects.

Symptoms and Signs of Diphtheria

Diphtheria symptoms typically appear 2 – 5 days after infection and may include:

• Fever
• Neck swelling
• Sore throat
• Running nose/Catarrh
• Red eyes
• Grey or white patches on the throat and tonsils.

Safeguarding Measures to Prevent the Spread of Diphtheria

The most effective prevention method is vaccination. Other safeguarding measures to prevent the spread of diphtheria include:

• Ensure a hygienic environment.
• Provide hand washing facilities with liquid soaps.
• Ensure the availability of running water for regular washing of both hands.
• Enforce the use of nose mask.

Our School’s Commitment

Holyway Schools is dedicated to maintaining a healthy and safe environment. Pastor Jacob Akinola Fapohunda, the chairman of Holyway Schools, has implemented measures to effectively combat Diphtheria, including a standard and standby hand basin with treated running water, a thermometer, and soap dispensers for regular washing of the hands of our pupils, students, teachers and parents. He also provided free nose masks to all employees, pupils and students as part of the school’s efforts to prevent the diphtheria outbreak and to keep everyone safe in the school environment.

In line with the age-old saying, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness,” we kindly ask that parents follow these guidelines at home in order to protect and safeguard their children’s health and well-being.

Stay vigilant, stay informed, and let us keep our community safe together.
